How deep is a Media Wall Fireplace?

22 January, 2024

This is a question that is commonly asked by our customers, as they start to envision how a media wall can fit within their home.

The characteristics and use cases of a media wall mean that it must be deep enough to accommodate the fireplace itself, alongside the various cables, wiring and entertainment systems that you wish to install in it. However, this can make it tricky to estimate how much space you’ll need.

So below, we’ve shared our insights into the depth required for a media wall fireplace, plus our guidance on wall types and other spacing points that you will need to consider.

What are the depth requirements for a media wall fireplace?

A standard media wall fireplace is between 200mm – 500mm deep.

The fires themselves are generally 300mm deep. So, the depth of the media wall is dependent on the size of the fireplace, and any other elements that need to be accommodated (we’ve covered this in more detail below).

Media wall fireplaces are bespoke structures, which are carefully sized to ensure all of the customer’s specific requirements are met.

As a result, the sizes of a media wall can also be adjusted to suit the space available, the room it is located in, and the aesthetic you want to create. For example, a larger display can be used to achieve a bold focal point, and create an immersive viewing experience (with the built-in entertainment system). Or, smaller media walls can be used to effectively utilise the available area, and decrease clutter, while creating the appearance of space.

So, if you’re considering a media wall fireplace, we recommend speaking to our team. They can provide you with guidance specific to your home, and advise you on the different points to consider.

What type of wall is best for a media wall fireplace?

Media wall fireplaces use a specific construction, called a false TV wall.

These structures are made by constructing a stud wall. This forms the skeleton of the false wall. It is then covered in plasterboard, and decorated to seamlessly tie in with the rest of the room.

These false TV walls protrude into the room, so that there is sufficient space for the fireplace and entertainment systems to be embedded within it.

When building a false TV wall, you will already need to have confirmed the dimensions of your fireplace and entertainment systems, plus the fuel type of the fireplace that you are using. This is because, for some fireplace types, the use of the standard wooden frame is not suitable.

So, to ensure a precise and safe structure that secures a flawless finish, we strongly recommend hiring a specialist to build your media wall and install your fireplace.

What do you need to consider for spacing a media wall fireplace?

When calculating the space requirements for your media wall, the factors you will need to consider include:

  • The fireplace size
  • The TV size
  • Where you would like the TV to be placed
  • Cables and wiring
  • Shelving requirements
  • Storage requirements
  • Power outlets
  • Speakers or sound systems
  • Games consoles
  • Smart home technologies
  • Lighting
  • Artwork

These are just the typical factors to consider for designing media wall fireplace layouts. Of course, your media wall might feature some, a couple, or all of these elements. Media walls are bespoke solutions, and their features vary from person to person, based on their specific requirements.
