How can you tell that your gas fireplace is unsafe or overdue for its service?

So long as you arrange for regular servicing schedules, a correctly installed and well-maintained gas fireplace is extremely unlikely to encounter unexpected issues. 

But, the signs that warn you that your gas fireplace is operating unsafely (or urgently needs a service) include:

• Unusual smells
• Smells of sulphur (has a distinctive egg-like smell)
• The fire regularly going out 
• Difficulty igniting the fireplace 
• Unusual noises (e.g. popping or banging)
• The pilot light frequently goes out
• Excessive condensation in the room
• Flames appearing yellow or ‘lazy’ (rather than the usual firm, blue flames)
• Build-ups of soot 
• The fireplace or surrounding walls developing stains 
• Feelings of headaches or dizziness – Note, this could be an indicator of carbon monoxide exposure, so should be addressed urgently.

If you notice any of these warning signs, then you should immediately turn off your fireplace, and arrange for servicing from a trusted, qualified engineer. Don’t attempt to turn your fireplace back on, until your engineer confirms that it is safe to do so.
