Top Choices for Fireplace Accessories

5 July, 2014

The seemingly consistent increases in energy costs year on year have meant that the traditional fireplace has made a big comeback. Many homes are now starting up the fire rather than boosting up the central heating, providing a homely warmth and glow which has been lost in the UK for a while.

But now you’ve started to make use of your fireplace you might want to consider the variety of different fireplace accessories which are on offer. Styles have changed considerably and you can now find decorative, elegant, stylish and practical accessories which suit any home.

Fire screens

A fireplace screen used to mean a dull board or grill in front of your fireplace, but there is now a great range of fire screens to choose from. You can reflect the antique nature of your fireplace with an ornate guard or choose something with a more modern, decorative look. Your fire screen can now serve two purposes; protecting animals and children from naked flames and sprucing up the décor of your home.

Coal and log holders

However you choose to fuel your fire, you are going to need somewhere to put those logs and coals. Many homes have done away with their traditional coal cellar and most modern homes never had one in the first place. There are some brilliant metal coal buckets which not only serve you in a practical sense but they can be selected to match your fireplace surround or the overall décor of the room. Logs can be neatly stacked but if you don’t have space then a wicker basket is a light and elegant way to store them for use.

Fireplace tools

Traditional fireplace tools are now considered to be full of character and don’t have to be the dated, shiny brass kind you remember from decades gone by. Wrought iron offers a rustic look and makes it feel like your fireplace has always been in use with sensible tools like pokers, grabbers and shovels.

Fireplace tiles

If your fireplace is truly original, or if you’re trying to create that feel, then fireplace tiles are ideal. Traditional tiles usually involve floral patterns so make sure your décor is quiet simple enough to accommodate these eye-catching tiles. You don’t need many to make an impression as anywhere between 10 and 15 tiles should be sufficient to create a border around your fireplace.

Fire bellows and blowers

Though it might seem a little outdated, the fire bellow is a great tool to have if you’re getting a natural fire going – there is no need for huffing and puffing. This classic device will look great in any living room and is even available in leather and wood designs, helping to build the traditional look and feel of your fireplace.
